New York Packaging was established in 1957 by founders Howard Gelfand and Edward Rabiea, originally operating three factories in Brooklyn, New York. There, in the late 50s, our company became one of the first plastic manufacturers in the United States to extrude polyethylene film, and we quickly became known as a trusted provider of plastic bags and other packaging products.
Just a few short years later, in 1963, we were able to establish strategic alliances with key Asian plastic pioneers. These alliances have proven to be very successful in serving this emerging international market, and we continue to maintain an extensive network in the worldwide plastics industry.
In the late 1970s, New York Packaging’s US production was relocated to several facilities in Long Island, New York. In addition to our Long Island facilities, in 2008, we opened distribution facilities in China, Hong Kong, and other countries to ensure our continued capability to distribute products all over the world.
2001 and Beyond: Redi Bag and Direct Supply
In 2001, New York Packaging became an importer of plastic bags and packaging products from international manufacturers, enabling us to form Redi Bag USA to supply products directly to supermarkets. With Redi Bag USA, we enabled supermarkets to take control of their purchasing efforts and receive the highest-quality, custom-printed plastic bags and packaging products. With our vast array of products, Redi Bag USA enables a supermarket to source multiple items from one company and order by the truckload, achieving economies of scale and directly reducing the total cost of products across the board.
Also in 2001, Redi Bag USA introduced two revolutionary, patented plastic bag products for the supermarket industry: the Redi Bag and the Better Header Bag. The Redi Bag was the first produce bag to come preopened on a roll, making it the easiest-to-use rolled produce bag on the market. The Better Header Bag was developed with an external sleeve to keep all bags contained, eliminate waste, enhance safety, and even provide point-of-sale marketing opportunities.
Most recently, in 2015, Redi Bag USA invented a preopened headerless produce bag as well as an innovative HDPE slider deli bag. Through Redi Bag USA, we have remained at the forefront of our industry, providing innovative solutions in custom plastic bags and packaging products.
