Our Carton Reduction Program offers customers an alternative to the standard 100-case pack, with options for higher case packs/counts of 200 or 300 bags. The essence of this program is not just in offering more bags per case but in the profound environmental and logistical benefits it brings.
To truly understand the impact of the program, let’s consider the experience of one of the largest retailers in the USA, which transitioned to a 300-case pack from the standard 100-case pack. This move was not merely a logistical decision but a strategic one, aligning perfectly with the customer’s sustainability goals and operational efficiency. By opting for the 300-case pack, the customer significantly reduced the number of containers required for shipping, substantially decreasing CO2 emissions and packaging material usage.
Now, let’s understand the tangible benefits of this program from the perspective of numbers & results. For instance, while a 100-pack fits 1,500 cases or 150,000 bags per 40-foot container, a 300-pack accommodates 1,300 cases or 390,000 bags within the same container space. This optimization in packing and shipping enhances logistical efficiency and significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation and packaging materials. Not to mention the huge savings margin a business can leverage.
Decoding the Environmental Benefits
In 2023, our customer, the leading retailer inthe USA, purchased 192,033 cases (300-pack), totaling 57,609,900 bags, requiring only 148 container loads (40 feet). Had they stuck with the 100-case pack, we would have shipped 384 container loads, doubling the amount.
By using the 300-pack, we shipped 236 fewer containers, a 61% reduction. This translates to about 3% of a standard cargo ship’s capacity, which is significant. According to Sinay Maritime Data Solutions, a fully loaded ship traveling from Vietnam to New York City emits 16.14 grams of CO2 per kilometer per metric ton. Thus, by not shipping 236 containers, we reduced our carbon footprint by a staggering 978,000,000 grams of CO2.
Furthermore, by analyzing corrugated packaging usage, we found that the customer’s switch to the 300-pack resulted in New York Packaging and the customer collectively using 320,436 fewer square feet of corrugated material.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, this is equivalent to saving 264 trees.
