Waste disposal has been a severe and recurrent problem worldwide for decades, especially in the last few years. Proper waste disposal, management, and recycling are essential to protect the environment and life around us. Thanks to can liners, waste segregation and management have become more accessible and realistic at scale.

What are Can Liners?

A can liner, or garbage or trash bag, is a bag that is used for disposing of waste. These are typically used to cover a waste container or receptacle, preventing the waste from contaminating its inner portion. Resin is popularly used for manufacturing can liners, and the different kinds of can liners are:

  • Linear Low-Density Polyethylene
  • High-Density Polyethylene
  • Low-Density Polyethylene
  • Reclaim

Each type can store and dispose of various materials such as glass, clothing, paper cups, bowls, etc.

What type of can liners do you require? Depending on the material you wish to dispose of- be it for industrial or consumer purposes.

Types of Can Liners

Before moving on to the types of can liners in detail, it is essential to know some basic terms tied to them.

Can Liner Gauge: Refers to the thickness of the film that subsequently determines the strength, weight, and resilience of the canliner. The gauge measurement of the can liners can vary between mils and microns, based on the type. One mil = 25.4 microns in this conversion.

Depending on what you need to dispose of, different can liners can be used: for sharper objects, look for can liners with higher gauges or microns. For blunt materials, look for lower gauge or mils.

Linear Low-Density Polyethylene

Linear Low-Density Polyethylene can liners are ideal for disposing of sharp objects since they are strong, stretch easily, and are resistant to tear & puncture. Some examples of waste you can dispose of with linear low-density liners are glass, outdoor debris, kitchen waste, bar waste, etc.

High-Density Polyethylene

Can liners made of High-Density Polyethylene are ideal for disposing of blunt materials such as paper and other office waste. These have lower thicknesses and are resistant to temperature. These are typically prone to easy tearing and require the disposal of soft waste.

Reclaim

If the resin can liner has been used at least once beforehand, it is known as Reclaim. These can be recycled consumer can liners or even industrial scrap. Reclaim is typically used to manufacture heavy can liners with high gauges.

Can Liner Seals

Seal for can liners is a term that describes the bottom of a trash can liner. These can come in three types:

  • Star
  • Flat
  • Gusset

Star Seal

Can liner manufacturers produce the star seal liners by folding the bottom of the liner several times, in a star-like pattern, before finally sealing it. This tight sealing prevents leaks and easily takes up the container’s shape. Most of the high-density liners are star seals since they inherently have lower film thickness; thus, it is necessary to fold them multiple times to avoid tearing.

Flat Seal

Flat seal liners are produced by sealing the bottom of the bag, which means the liner’s length isn’t compromised with multiple folds like star seals. It is strong, durable, and leak-proof. Due to the style, it can be difficult for flat seal liners to take up the shape of the container or receptacle.

Gusset Seal

Can liner manufacturers prepare gusset seals by making a pleat on each side of the liner, tucked to form gussets. These are additionally strengthened at the outer edges with layers of film. Although strong, gusset seals could have leakages with wet waste.
